Happy 43rd Birthday, David Tennant! (April 18th, 1971)
THIS POST IS ILLEGAL………. UNF
How much I hate him when he does that…… and you know “what” my dear Emeline :3
I have several reasons about why you hate him… When he stares at you with his big baby blue eyes, when he blinks and you almost feel a little breeze on your face because of his long eyelashes, when he is so closed to you, you can touch him, you know he is real but you need to touch him to be sure you’re not dreaming, when you’re so amazed by his pure and natural beauty, when he is so innocently sexy he isn’t even aware he is a pure temptation, and so on…
OMG you are getting the point my dear.. Plus…..you just KILLED ME with those exact words….. UNF
I just killed myself too… We’re on the same boat my dear Michelle. :-)

day 3 of 10 Days Of POI
favourite episode → The Devil’s Share
HOW this can be a favorite episode!?!??! I mean….. NO
So what, a heartbreaking episode can’t be someone’s favourite? Most of my favourite episodes are soul-crushing, not just in PoI. They’re the ones that flesh out characters most, give you insight, will help you realise what makes your characters tick.
And The Devil’s Share shows us so many interesting things. It’s a fantastic piece of work. We see a different side to everyone. Let’s take flashbacks first.
We are shown that Harold regrets Nathan’s death every day. He is the survivor; he feels it should’ve been him who died, not Nathan. Nathan was the one that cared for Irrelevants. We knew that Harold was saving Irrelevants not only because what was right, but also because that’s what Nathan would’ve wanted, what he was willing to give his life for.
And then, we see Shaw who is told she can’t be a doctor because she doesn’t care. We know she cares - the voices are there, she just has to listen - and the fact that she is removed from the program must’ve hurt her. I realise that she has always been sociopathic but on some level, she must’ve wanted to blend in, and her efforts weren’t enough. We obviously don’t know for sure but I dare speculate that it may have contributed to her reluctance to even admit that she’s involved/part of something bigger (not wanting to carry a phone off the job, saying she’s in it only for the dog). In terms of the episode, the flashback showed that she just couldn’t bring herself to care about her patients, but I think in terms of her storyline there’s more to it than that.
Then there’s John who is a brave little soldier who does what he is told to do. He kills the interrogator without a second thought. He’s John Reese, the unstoppable killing machine. Remember RAM? So what exactly happened in between?
And then there’s my favourite Fusco. We know that he used to be dirty but he isn’t anymore and that he enjoys being good. We know that he is snarky but kind, caring, a good dad. But we also know that even when he was dirty, he was dirty out of loyalty. He was “framed” into being dirty by Stills, but he knew it isn’t good, he still cared. And in this flasback, we see that he has zero regrets about killing a drug dealer. I mean, sure, he (the drug dealer) killed a rookie who had a kid on the way but it’s still killing someone. Lionel didn’t regret it. There’s a ruthlessness to Fusco that we didn’t know was there.
And if you focus on the current events… We see John who’s all about revenge. He knows this isn’t going to bring Carter back but he leaves to find her killer. We see Finch who’s desperate to find him (which is even more interesting if you remember what happened to Dillinger), and how he won’t hesitate to utilise everything and everyone he can, including Root - who is a definition of dangerous. We see Shaw who’s also all about saving tall, dark and deranged - also an important milestone for her. We see them all working together for John. And then they find John and he doesn’t listen. Harold reminds him that Joss wanted to bring HR down on her legal terms and killing Alonzo Quinn would be going against her wishes… and John does it anyway. I think it’s a very interesting move that his gun is empty. Because we see that he is desperate to avenge Joss even if it means disrespecting her wishes, and at the same time he doesn’t have to kill Quinn. He didn’t kill Quinn but he should feel guilty for pulling the trigger. And I suspect it’s a part of why he leaves Harold; it’s not just because of the machine.
And then we see Fusco who gets even more interesting when he hunts Simmons down. He gets in a fight with a man who’s twice his size, better built and probably better trained to throw punches around. He fights - and wins - honestly. He doesn’t cheat. And though he’s mourning Joss as well, he is able to stop himself in time - unlike John. He takes it out on Simmons but he doesn’t go over the edge. He brings him to justice - legal justice, like Joss would’ve wanted - and he has his crowning moment of awesome/badass when he walks into the precinct with Simmons in handcuffs. And in that moment, he’s a better man than John. Our everyman is better than our hero. I mean, how amazing is that? And how totally in character. And then Elias shows up out of nowhere and watches Quinn get strangled to death. It shows that he really respected Carter. Having him kill Quinn after Fusco had arrested him was a good way out to have justice done for Carter without getting any of our heroes dirty. I bet some would prefer for John to kill him to make things interesting but for different reasons, it wouldn’t be right.
Also, it’s beautifully shot. The amount of symbolism going on in this episode is just epic. I picked a few examples for my gifset but let’s go through it. It begins with a heartbeat - John’s heartbeat - and it ends with a fading heartbeat. That’s poetic even if not very subtle. I love that shot of newspaper headlines in NYC right before we see Harold picking up the phone - nobody says anything and yet we learn that it’s been a few days, that everyone’s talking about Carter and that the search for Simmons is on. There’s beautiful imagery throughout the episode. That haunting look of Jim’s face in flashback? I get the chills. Every time. I love how cold the flashbacks were - we don’t see the therapists for most part, it’s raw and kind of distant. I love the first opening minutes - Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt is one of those songs that you can’t listen to too often because they lose their impact. It’s a powerful song, it fits the narrative perfectly and the images that go with it are just as powerful. The “you are all so fucked right now” look on John’s face is just perfect. Jim didn’t even have to say a word. I love that sequence so much I don’t even care for a very obvious continuity error.
Overall, I just think this episode sets up so much, gives us backstories, beautiful images and things to think about. To be honest I’m surprised The Devil’s Share isn’t everyone’s favourite episode :P I liked Carter and she went out fighting, she wasn’t forgotten right after her death, and this episode was a homage to the effect she’s had on their lives. It was just right.
Reblog because the answer is so awesome…………
